Former DPS employee gets 24 months for payroll fraud

Detroit — A former payroll manager for Detroit Public Schools was sentenced Thursday to 24 months in prison for defrauding the district of hundreds of thousands of dollars by writing payroll checks to dead employees and another who was receiving disability payments.

Companies have to understand that the payroll is the largest expense area for many organisations, and one which should be monitored carefully. Payroll fraud accounts for 17% of all fraudulent disbursements suffered by organisations. Payroll fraud by is an uncomplicated scheme. Uncovering the fraudulent transaction and, subsequently, proving the payroll fraud can be difficult because of the dollar magnitude and volume of transactions involved.
